That would mean revealing his identity, and that is something the BBC does not want to happen.The Stig regularly appears on Top Gear dressed in white and with his face blocked by a visor on his helmet. He is well-known for both his driving skills and his anonymity.
Only a few people connected with the programme, including Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May know The Stig’s identity. Not even the celebrity guests know who he is.
According to The Daily Mail, he arrives on set early and leaves late so that he will not be recognized.
The paper reported that lawyers have warned him that publication of his autobiography would breach his contractual and confidentiality obligations to the show.
Some people fear the dispute will result in the BBC getting rid of The Stig, or in the man behind the visor quitting.
The other Top Gear stars have made a lot of money through book deals but The Stig has been unable to do this.
Jeremy Clarkson suggested the name for The Stig. He had attended Repton School in Derbyshire where the nickname for a new boy was ‘The Stig’. Top Gear producer Andy Wilman was also a pupil at Repton.
The white Stig has been on Top Gear since 2003. Before him there was a black Stig, who was fired for revealing his identity (Formula One driver Perry McCarthy).
Some of those suspected of being The Stig are Damon Hill, Ben Collins, Julian Bailey, Chris Goodwin, Russ Swift and Perry McCarthy.
At one point viewers thought The Stig had been revealed when Michael Shumacher dressed in the white outfit, but it was later revealed that he wasn’t.
