AND SO THE WORLD TURNS

As The World Turns off the air

For 54 years the daytime U.S. soap opera "As The World Turns" has been entertaining fans. That long run ended on Friday after low ratings brought the show to a close.

The CBS soap started in 1956. During it's run several of the top actors of today starred in the show based in the fictional town of Oakdale, Illinois including Julianne Moore, Martin Sheen and Meg Ryan.

From 1958 until 1978 it was the top rated soap on US television. Created by Ima Phillips the show focused on character development and psychological realism instead of the standard melodrama that was seen in soap operas at the time of its start.

The core characters had careers in law, medicine and the clergy.

CBS announced the end of “As the World Turns” in December. The network blamed low ratings on the cancellation. “We are disappointed and saddened by the news that they show is not being renewed. It will certainly be a loss for all of us, and for the show’s loyal audience,” executive producer Chris Goutman said at the time.

Now that the US soap opera As the World Turns comes to an end , Coronation Street may become the longest-running soap opera in the world. The drama’s first episode was broadcast on December 9, 1960, and it will celebrate its fiftieth anniversary later this year.
