Sacha Baron Cohen will play Freddie Mercury in a film about the band Queen. The untitled film is scheduled to begin shooting next year.
The choice of Baron Cohen, who is well known for his roles as Borat and Ali G, may surprise some but those involved in the project feel he is the right choice.
In a press release, Graham King, of GK Films, which is co-producing the movie in partnership with Tribeca and Queen Films, said: "Freddie Mercury was an awe-inspiring performer so with Sacha in the starring role, coupled with Peter Morgan's screenplay and the support of Queen, we have the perfect combination to tell the real story behind their success."
Peter Morgan, who was nominated for Academy Awards for “The Queen” and “Frost/Nixon”, is already working on the script for the film, which will focus on the period leading up to the 1985 Live Aid concert.
Baron Cohen is currently starring in Martin Scorsese’s Hugo Cabret. He was nominated for an Academy Award for his adapted screenplay for “Borat” and won a Golden Globe for his performance.
[Hugo Cabret] tells the tale of an orphan boy living a secret life in the walls of a Paris train station. When Hugo encounters a broken machine, an eccentric girl, and the cold, reserved man who runs the toy shop, he is caught up in a magical, mysterious adventure that could put all of his secrets in jeopardy. It will star Ben Kingsley, Sacha Baron Cohen, Chloƫ Moretz (Kick-Ass), Jude Law, Ray Winstone and Christopher Lee.
