AN ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN

Millions watch as live broadcast TV stunt goes wrong

A packed audience along with millions of television viewers at home were left shocked as a stuntman attempted to jump over five cars wearing kangaroo spring boots on a popular German television show.

Amateur stuntman Samuel Koch, 23, was preparing to leap over the third car of five on his spring-loaded stilts. He hit the car windscreen then somersaulted over the car and landed face-first on the stage floor just feet away from a shocked studio audience. He is in the University Hospital of Dusseldorf with serious injuries.

Presenter Thomas Gottschalk announced he was calling off the show. He has been presenting the show since 1987 and it is believed this is the first time he has had to do this.

The show, Wetten, Dass is the most popular Saturday night show in Europe. In English it means, "I bet that...", it is broadcast live to millions in Germany, Austria and Switzerland and often features A-list celebrities like Katy Perry, Phil Collins, GĂ©rard Depardieu and pop stars Take That. Teenage heart-throb Justin Bieber later announced on Twitter that he will be cancelling his appearance on the variety show following the horrific stunt.
