Peru fighting plague of rabid vampire bats who've bitten 500 people

A remote Amazon community in Peru is under attack from rabid vampire bats who swoop down quietly and bite, often killing their prey. Four children have already died, and the entire community is being vaccinated against further attacks.

Peru's Amazon region, which has experienced deep deforestation, is under attack by mass rabid bats, who feed on the blood of mammals while they sleep. Four children in the Awajun indigenous tribe died after being bitten by the bloodsucking bats.

The BBC reports that Peru's health ministry has sent emergency teams to the region to give the rabies vaccine to over 500 people who have also been attacked. Experts say there is definitely a link between this event and deforestation.

They point out that vampire bats normally feed on wildlife or livestock, but they have been known to turn to attacking humans, particularly when their rain forest living quarters have been destroyed.

Newsweek reports that this is not the first time bats have killed humans in recent years. In Brazil in 2004, more than 300 people were bitten and 13 died. The reason for the catastrophe, the bats were attacking human beings because their habitat was being eroded. They struck again in Brazil in 2005, when officials confirmed that 23 people died and more than 1,000 were bitten.

I TELL YA LADS , WE'LL ALL BE KILLED IN OUR BEDS ....... THE ZOMBIES AND VAMPIRES ARE COMING
