Canadian couple seal place in history book for donating winnings

A married couple won the 6-49 lottery on July 14th. Three and a half months later, the pair has hardly anything left of their winnings. Were they a couple who went crazy, going from rags to riches?

No, they were seniors, and at least one of them was experiencing some health issues. They didn't drink their winnings away, and they didn't blow the money by spending willy-nilly on consumer goods. They gave it away. Imagine having $11.2 million and deciding to give it away! The news story is going viral around the world, and many water cooler conversations at work are revolving around the question: would you give away your lottery winnings?

Allen and Violet Large, of Truro, Nova Scotia have big hearts. They have taken their huge jackpot and distributed the winnings in a very thoughtful way. According to the Chronicle Herald, which broke the story Thursday morning, the couple viewed the winnings as a "big headache." Fearing predation by con artists, the darling duo drew up a list of organizations they decided to enrich. The Chronicle said donations went to places such as .....................

"the local fire department, churches, cemeteries, the Red Cross, the Salvation Army, hospitals in Truro and Halifax, where Violet underwent her cancer treatment, and organizations that fight cancer, Alzheimer’s and diabetes."

The couple told the Chronicle Herald they felt they had a good life together, and were grateful to have each other. Ultimately they only wanted what they already had.
