Moat, 37, died in Newcastle General Hospital where PC David Rathband, who he gunned down, is being treated.
He shot himself at 1.15am in Rothbury, Northumberland. He was rushed to hospital by armed convoy and arrived at 2.05am. But medics could not save him.
He had earlier held a sawn-off shotgun to his neck as he was surrounded by police snipers after being trapped on a river bank.
Crazed Moat had been on the run for nearly a week since wounding his ex-girlfriend Sam Stobbart and killing her new lover Chris Brown.
The hunt for Moat has involved officers from 15 forces. Two people were arrested yesterday on suspicion of helping him. Another two have already been charged with conspiracy to murder and having a gun.
TV survival star Ray Mears was among those who helped in the hunt for Moat yesterday. The bushcraft expert, brought in at the request of police, looked for clues and trails left by Moat in the Northumberland wilderness.
Ex-Newcastle

Gascoigne - who had apparently come by taxi from Newcastle - said he had brought the wanted man a "can of lager, some chicken, a mobile phone and something to keep warm".
